Vorpal Swords are a particular type of magical weapon in Dungeons & Dragons, although the concept has since passed on to gaming in general. Taking their name from an enchanted blade that featured in the poem "Jabberwocky", vorpal swords are imbued with an enchantment that makes them supernaturally sharp, able to cut through just about anything with very little trouble. The precise mechanics have varied between editions, but in general, vorpal swords in D&D have usually had either special rules to allow them to amputate an opponent's limbs, the ability to inflict an instant death via decapitation, or both.
