Freight Train
Smaller than the humongous Titan Train but no less important. Freight Trains remained unchanged for millennia as their sheer versatility and simplicity makes them as unkillable as the M2 Browning and the RPG-7. They remain a crucial strategic asset for logistics from both Imperial and Chaos forces.
- Length: 100-900m; approx
- Weight: 2-30 kilotonnes; approx
- Crew: 1-3 crew (Civilian), 200-400+ crew (Military); approx
- Max Speed: 300-400kph; approx
Overview[edit]
Consisting of nothing more than a diesel-electric locomotive engine unit followed by a random amount of freight, flatbed and passenger cars, Freight Trains are an important logistical asset for both commerce and wartime procedures. Whilst larger trains such as the Titan Train are more specialised for superheavy cargo, Freight Trains are important for....all the rest really. Because you essentially have a bunch of interchangeable units like a giant lego setpiece, there are no stock-standard 'patterns' for a Freight Train. So their size and length can vary by a lot. The smallest Freight Trains are around 100 meters in length, but the largest could reach nearly a kilometre.[1]
Owing to their versatility, cargo freight isn't the only thing they can transport. They could transport people too, if the need arises, or a mixture of passengers, goods and hazardous materials if one want to min-max transport. Likewise, their simplicity on both the vehicle and the tracks makes any repairs comparatively simple and cheap. Because of this, they are important for pretty much any Imperial world.
When shit hits the fan, these civilian trains could also be dual-usable and turned into an important military logistics supply vehicle for the Imperium or Chaos. They could also be turned into makeshift armoured trains if needed which makes them into mobile command centres/battleship on tracks. Chaos factions, such as the Lost and the Damned in particular, are known to use them as armoured trains due to their simplicity, size and sheer speed. In Darktide, one such train was turned into a Nurglite Virus Bomb on tracks, as it intentionally leaked Nurgle's afflictions before blowing itself up.
Trivia[edit]
- It should be noted that the model of the trains in Darktide was ripped straight out from a scratch-built model of one, as can be seen here.
