Gods and Goddesses[edit]
Benevolent[edit]
- Hentastous
- The God of Knowledge
The first god to find his purpose, Hentastous is the god of knowledge and the father of magic. Hentastous had always enjoyed learning, experimenting, discovering the secrets the universe has to offer. He spent much of his time experimenting with his powers, learning how to manipulate the universe itself just as the other gods do. Hentastous observed the other deities when they created anything as to see their methods and if he could improve upon them or find alternate ways to do such. He learned the properties of the creations of the other gods, writing them on tablets of energy as he did with all knowledge. When Torrentious created life, Hentastous immediately stopped his work to see what had been done. He learned what life was, as well what defines existence through Torrentious' creations though he was denied access to the great forge that birthed these sapient beings. Try as he might, Hentastous could not recreate life as Torrentious could, producing only golems and simple animals. The secrets behind the forge would forever escape Hentastous, leaving him with a feeling of loss as that knowledge would never be known. Though the forge would remain a secret, Hentastous found enjoying in learning from the creations of Terrentious. He discovered that the beings from the forge too could learn and retain knowledge. This gave Hentastous new found vigor, as he spent countless years observing these creatures. Hentastous attempted to teach these creatures, giving them knowledge of the secrets the universe holds, though this turned near impossible as such knowledge broke the minds of those he taught. Many decades later he attempted again to teach these secrets, though only incomplete scraps of knowledge as to keep their minds stable. This proved to work and the sapient races gained some control over the universe, calling this power magic. Hentastous brought about the idea of storing knowledge, leading to the creation of libraries and later then schooling to pass on this stored knowledge. With magic, Hentastous learned that the sapient races could only learn small scraps at a time and the more one learns in the secrets of the universe, the more powerful yet more broken a mind becomes. Time would mend these damaged minds though time could only do so much. Due to this Hentastous asked Torrentious to create a race that could handle these secrets, creatures whose minds would not so easily break. This encounter lead Torrentious to forge the winged beasts known as dragons. These creatures were given to Hentastous and he found that they could handle far more secrets than any other creature. Now Hentastous is worshiped by scholars as the god of knowledge and by mages as the father of magic.
- Torrentious
- The God of the Forge & Life
Torrentious began as all other gods did, a being of great power but with no form or purpose. Each being sought their own purpose, growing busy in their work. Torrentious created his domain and a grand forge within wrought from a powerful essence he found. Torrentious smithed, creating many things though through centuries he became bored with his lifeless creations. He sought to create something with a mind, something he could interact with and had purpose of its own. Torrentious created life. Elves, humans, dwarves, siddh, among other intelligent beings were created from his forge though he had no place for them for his domain was but a massive forge. For this Torrentious went seeking help from the other powerful beings. Kirntle was asked to help his dilemma. Kirntle was more than happy to assist as he had not found purpose yet. Kirntle created the known world and as such found his own purpose in the process. Torrentious placed his creations on the new planet and continued to create more life to entertain him. He taught his creations how to forge, though the creation of life was tied to his forge alone. Soon most other gods became jealous of Torrentious and his ability to create those similar to them. The others attempted to create life and succeeded, but none could match the power the god of life's forge. The forge held a secret that even Torrentious knew little about and without it, sapience could not be bestowed on the creations. The life the other gods created became what are known as animals as well as monsters. One such attempt created drakes, a crude imitation of Torrentious' dragons. Torrentious eventually decided to live with his creations that he cherished so.
- Kirntle
- The God of Flame & Earth
Since the beginning Kirntle was fascinated with heat and flame. He spent most of his time creating materials that we would in turn light ablaze to see its effects. Though occupied, Kirntle felt as if he wasn't doing anything significant. Soon thereafter Torrentious came to him for assistance. Torrentious had created life and knew of Kirntle's ability of creating various materials and so he came to Kirntle asking for help in creating a home for his creations. This sparked Kirntle's interest, who agreed to help Torrentious. Kirntle used his knowledge to create the planet. Kirntle left the planet barren for Torrentious to shape though he left behind something that marked his involvement. Kirntle created an eternally burning liquid that ran from the surface of the planet to the very core as a reminder that the planet was his creation. With the creation of the planet Kirntle found his purpose; he was to create. From the three moons that orbit that planet to the stars, Kirntle created all. The solar system itself was birthed by Kirntle over the course of centuries of work and continues to expand. Kirntle did not forget of his original creation though and from time visits that planet to see what it has become. When the creations of Torrentious showed the capacity to learn he taught them the secret to fire as well as all of its properties. The races were fascinated by fire just as he was which lead them to worship Kirntle. Kirntle was pleased and as such he created a large, burning star visible from the planet that would provide heat as his gift to the peoples of the planet.
- Helen
- The Goddess of Light & Bravery
Helen has since creation been enthralled by light. When she look upon a source of great light she is inspired to create, inspired to find her purpose. It took her centuries of roaming about until she had found what she truly enjoyed. She studied the different creatures that lived on the newly created planet, discovering they to are drawn to the light. Light gave these creatures, both sapient and not, strength. Light brought them hope and life. Helen felt as if she was desperately needed by the creatures. She devoted her time to leading the peoples of the planet, giving them light when they were on the verge of being lost. She appeared as a muse at times, radiating such brilliant light that one must shield one's eyes lest be blinded, inspiring courage into the hearts of the peoples when it was needed most. In her fascination with light, Helen attempted to create beings of light though found that light could not hold a single form for long. She went to Torrentious, asking for him to create such beings as he held the power to create creatures no other could. Torrentious agreed to this, always enjoying the act of creation. Through his forge elemental beings of light were created, though Torrentious got carried away with his forge, creating beings wrought from all the elements. He gave Helen power of those beings of light and gave out his other elementals to rest of the pantheon of gods. After the creation of the sun, Helen began to admire Kirntle and his power over flames, which shed light of colors she never thought possible. As the wife of Kirntle, Helen leads the people of the planet, answering their prayers when Kirntle cannot. Today Helen is the exemplar of courage, her symbol being that of sun which is worn on the capes of righteous knights and on the banner of many kingdoms.
- Vespia
- The Goddess of Celebration & Love
- Comrhine
- The God of Fate & Luck
Comrhine found his purpose as he observed the myriad affairs of the world of death and life. He saw the vast formless sea of possibility that lay ahead for it, and imbued it with structure and meaning. It is by the will of the lord of fortune that events in the lives of mortals contrive to be significant, as they struggle to shape reality. Comrhine ensures that luck favors the bold, and each player must earn their place in his story. As the master of all things from happy coincidences to grave omens, Comrhine is worshiped as much by those who wish for a better world as by those who merely hope their plans won't be ruined today. Since the shape of the future is in his hands, his favor is coveted by many a mortal, but he has never revealed the intricacies of his expansive and elaborate plans to any but his most loyal servants. He has a tendency to micromanage the course of events, and may mistakenly neglect other things in favor of the present object of his attention.
Indifferent[edit]
- Shinra
- The Goddess of Wilderness
- Sindle
- The Goddess of Order & Sanity
- Gruul
- The God of War & Government
- Desden
- The God of Death
Desden, also called father and other iterations of, was one of the last of the great powers to find a purpose. For centuries Desden simply existed, searching for something that calls out to him though he found nothing that interested him. He watched as other gods worked, observing their creations hoping to find inspiration. Desden found what he was looking for after Torrentious became famous for the creation of life. After the creations of Desden expired, they released some sort of essence, the same essence found in the great forge of Torrentious. Desden became fascinated by these masses of essence, which he named "souls". Desden founded the concept of death though held back as he did not want to anger Torrentious. Torrentious was a kind being and saw Desden's fascination with the dead and knew of Desden's lack of purpose. He offered Desden full power over the expired, both corpses and souls. With this Desden found his purpose. He immediately constructed a place to house these souls, similar to the planet but free of the worries of life. Desden grew to love every soul that passed into his domain, treating the souls as if they were his children and he a loving father. He cared not of their actions in life, though he showed disappointment in some he still forgave all. With time the other gods became known to the planet and the concept of worship began to spread. The devout souls at times wished to live in the domain of the deity they worshiped. These souls needed approval of the god or goddess they worshipped to gain access to their domain in death. As the absolute ruler of the dead, Desden could deny souls access to domains of the other gods. Desden only wished the best for his children and as such would rarely prevent those wanting to pass to another domain though most chose to stay with Desden. Only one god has Desden prevented souls access to. This god is known as Girst, the god of slaughter & torture. The souls that passed to Girst were gruesomely tortured, forced to endure great pain and from these souls Girst birthed demons, evil creatures twisted from the acts performed on them. Desden would not allow such horrendous acts to be done on the souls and as such denies all souls from reaching Girst. Tension grew between Girst and Desden, eventually becoming enemies. Though souls were prevented from reaching him, Girst found a way to circumvent Desden's reach. He created a divine contract that once signed by his followers, would give his followers power in exchange for their souls. Before a follower of Girst dies, he rips the very soul from their body and drags it into his domain. Desden became furous at this, as well at other attempts to prevent souls from reaching him such as soulmancy, a form of necromancy that traps a being's soul instead of simply animating a corpse. Lichdom also posed a problem when the living tried to gain immortality. To become a lich one must either trick or bargain with Desden himself after performing various rituals to contact him. Desden is depicted as a large mass of organic material such as bones and flesh from various sapient races.
- Roran
- The God of Chaos & Madness
Roran delights in the collapse of systems, the disruption of the ordinary, and the subversion of expectations. He took on his role in the pantheon in an attempt to spice up the antics of Torrentious's creations by manipulating strange coincidences from random systems, such as climates, minds, and societies. He is often cursed for freak weather disturbances and prayed to by artists and poets, who worship him as the patron of creativity and spontaneity. Unlike with most gods, the rites and prayers addressed to Roran are passed along (somehow) with only one constant rule: they must never be performed the same way twice. His church is unstructured, not merely out of principle, but as much because of the practical fact that those devout worshipers most worthy of the hypothetical priesthood are too far gone in delusions and hallucinatory voices to function. Only a precious few men and women in all of history have retained their clarity while embracing his madness, and these enlightened mystics have been the epicenters of great upheaval in any age they have appeared in. It is typically only such exceptional individuals who are allowed to enter his schizophrenic domain after death. Most followers of his are sent back to life to continue their work in the mortal world. Perhaps as a final unanticipated jape to anyone who manages to encounter him in person, he keeps his form strangely static: a large humanoid made of swirling wind and water. His opposite number is Sindle, but they never actually fight due to her respect for the careful balance of the gods' interrelations and his blithe unconcern for her grievances.
